Sperm Station Ranbirbagh

The Sperm Station Ranbirbagh is situated on around 38 acres of land between Wandhama and Repora villages of district Ganderbal. The station is approximately 30 km faraway from the Srinagar city center. Leh Highway (Vailoo - kangan bypass) passes through the premises of the station. The sperm station was established under INDO-DANISH project in 1980 wherein equipment and pure bred jersey bulls required for the production and processing of frozen semen were obtained through the DANISH Government assistance. After the installation and commissioning of  all the equipments at the Project, the processing of bovine semen was started in the year 1982. Initially 30 veterinary centers which were inaccessible and could not be catered with liquid semen were selected through out the valley  for Artificial insemination programme with frozen semen. The LN2 demand of the sperm station and 30 A.I centers was initially met with the installation of  one Liquid Nitrogen  Plant (PLN106) at the Project producing 6ltrs of LN2 per hour. Gradually use of chilled semen was completely replaced with frozen semen throughout length and breadth of the valley including Ladakh.  The Frozen Semen Project, Ranbirbagh is at present catering the frozen semen demands of 697 centres of the valley and about 20 centers of Ladakh region.

OBJECTIVES of the Project:

  • Production and Distribution of graded Quality germplasm ( Jersey/HF )for genetic up gradation of local cattle
  • To increase the milk productivity of individual cows.
  •  Implementation of cattle breeding policy in the state.
